What Do You Mean They're Not Superheroes?: A Brief Look at Scott's Picks

MY INFINITE WISDOM DICTATES THAT THESE SHALL BE THE WINNERS

Best Single Issue (or One-Shot)
Justice League of America #11: “Walls,” by Brad Meltzer and Gene Ha (DC)
-What Brad Meltzer managed to do with this issue was stunning ... and then you add the ground-breaking, jaw-dropping, genre-defying, infinite creativity of a guy like Gene Ha and you have an Eisner
Best Continuing Series
Y: The Last Man, by Brian K. Vaughan, Pia Guerra, and Jose Marzan, Jr. (Vertigo/DC)
-This should go without question
Best Limited Series
Atomic Robo, by Brian Clevinger and Scott Wegender (Red 5 Comics)
-If you missed out on this absolutely awesome mini-series then you can't possibly understand why this pick was so easy for me ... get the Trade in June or wise up and find the issues
Best New Series
Scalped, by Jason Aaron and R. M. Guéra (Vertigo/DC)
-WITHOUT QUESTION!
Best Anthology
Postcards: True Stories That Never Happened, edited by Jason Rodriguez (Villard)

-KARL F'ING KERSHEL
Best Writer
Ed Brubaker, Captain America, Criminal, Daredevil, Immortal Iron Fist (Marvel)
-Bitch all you want but Daredevil and Immortal Iron Fist was enough to get him the nomination, Captain America and Criminal will be what gets him the win.

-This was soooo close to being Jeff Lemire but I think that Rutu Modan has a better shot.

Jae Lee, Dark Tower: The Gunslinger Born (Marvel)
-He took his skill to a higher level last year
Best Painter or Multimedia Artist (interior art)

Blog Log # 2 (Eisner Nominees Response)

Howdy friends! I'm understanding how great blogging is. I can say whatever I want without stopping to hear other people's points, that would show the world I don't know what I'm talking about. So, sit tight cause this hack is about to drop some knowledge. I would like to start by saying I don't really know what the Eisners are based on, quality or quanity. Are they like the Grammys? Anyway my winner for best single issue is Justice League #11. We are talking about Meltzer and Ha telling a heart wrenching story about Red Arrow and Vixen trapped in a crumbled building. This is the first issue that a member of the League finds out that Vixen can borrow powers from superheroes. I would like to say again Meltzer and Ha, Ha and Meltzer any way you slice it it's a beautiful thing. Best continuing series goes to The Boys by Ennis and Robertson. It would have been Y but I gave them best limited, even though they are not on that list. Y the Last man wins best limited because it is wrapped up, therefore no longer continuing. The best new series is up to you because I read nothing on the list( to keep Scott and Darren happy I will vote Scalped). Best Anthology goes to Captain America Omnibus (not on the list). Is there any doubt? Best writer is a tough one. On one hand you got Brubaker writing a lot of Marvel stuff, that has more limits than creator owned, and doing a great job. I will use one word to seal the deal Criminal. On the other hand Brian K. Vaughan ( Ex Machina, Y, yep even Lost) who let's his work speak for it's self. Joss got cut due to the fact it takes forever and a day to get an issue written by him. Best Digital, tune into the last week of this month's podcast to her my thoughts on this. It oughta be grand. Best writer/artist where the hell is Matt Wagner or Eric Powell on this list, I feel ashamed. Best penciller/inker/ inker team goes to Eric Powell because of Chinatown. The whole book was amazing and looked like a dream come true. The Goon breakdown was enough but Powell didn't stop there. Best Painter/ Multimedia artist is another tough one. The Epting team, Pia Guerra team, and Ethan Van Sciver are all great and well deserving of this award(or at least my love). Last and least is special recognition. Again, I'm ignorant to all names on this list,(this is where I turn in into but not least) so I nominate Scotty Don't for all his work, podcasts, and for generally being awesome. Darren you were a close second, sorry buddy. There you have it. I guess i should say there I have it. Til next time, Rob

Blog Log # 2 (I totally just ripped Darren off)

Howdy friends! I just wanted to clear something up. The word on the street is that I might have insinuated that Powers Annual might have taken a little time to come out on the last show. Some how it has gotten blown way out of proportion. I'm getting calls from lawyers, press, and even the real Marvel Kingpin Joe Quesadilla. Alright, with that said i guess I'm sorry. (by no means is this a public apology, I'm a man of my word... mostly!) As you should know Powers Annual came out today. If you don't know, you better find out real quick. I must give Bendis some props on the throwing this issue in my face. I should complain more! This issue was some of the most fun I have had in a long time reading a single issue. You win this battle Mr. Bendis but rest assured I'll be watching you, waiting for the moment you slip and I once again will rest upon my throne. ( maybe Battlestar Invasion or Skrull Galactica or whatever that book is called will give me the chance) But man (ha ha buttman, real mature guys!) this issue was amazing. I was taken back to the end of the first series, which resulted in me being taken back to the very beginning of the entire story. Not to mention we got to see a warthog get punched in the mouth. Not just punched in the mouth but punched in (side) the mouth. Must I say more? Yes! and I will and I'm pretty sure Scott might have a thing or two to say about it on this coming episode of the show. That means you can tune in and hear me talk about Bendis passionately, caringly, possibly sexily, and most definitely totally creepily. Don't miss it... or else! Smell ya'll later.

Words & Stuff: Strangers in Paradise Leaves an Echo

In 1993, Terry Moore created a comic series that will forever be held dear in the hearts of comic readers worldwide. It is a story of two friends as they deal with ordinary and extraordinary situations, which molds each other’s lives. It is a story of love and heartbreak, action and espionage, as two friends search for their true place in life. This 14-year work is Strangers in Paradise (SiP). This is the journey of Helen Francine Peters and Katina Marie Choovanksi (Katchoo) as they search through life only to find that they were all each other ever needed. This work has a great cast and in-depth plot structures, which weave throughout the entire series. It also contains well-written poetry and moving song lyrics that greatly enhance and portray the emotions of these dynamic characters. This series also catalogs Terry Moore’s artwork, as it seems to get better and better with each turn of the page. SiP can turn the most masculine man into a weeping girl with its shocking scenes and unexpected plot twists. As you get to see these characters grow and mature you feel like you’ve known them your whole lives and often find yourself mirroring their emotions. SiP has won numerous awards including the Eisner and the GLAAD award for best comic series. But all good things come to an end and on June 6 2007, Francine and Katchoo’s journey ended.
So what comes next? Where do SiP fans go from here? Terry Moore did a 3-issue series on DC’s Birds of Prey and small other works here or there but no work that could possibly measure up to the status of SiP. Well, where one story ends another begins and On March 5, 2008, Terry Moore unleashed his new on-going series, Echo. Echo is about Julie Martin, a young photographer who discovers a high-tech military battle suit, which becomes attached to her skin. Though the initial explanation of this new series may seem a far cry from the tender and down-to-earth story of SiP, it actually holds many of the same elements. Though it is filled with science fiction and government espionage, Terry Moore continues to produce solid story telling and emotional and dynamic characters, which keeps you enthralled from cover to cover. His artwork is at its peek as he fills every page with great detail and emotion and his dialogue is smooth and still holds elements of humor as SiP did. Though Echo #2 just came out this week, it is quickly climbing the charts as the best comic being made. I encourage you, your friends, and your grandmothers to read this book because comic and non-comic readers alike can enjoy it. Though Strangers in Paradise will always have a special place in my heart, Echo is quickly taking up residence.

What Do You Mean They're Not Superheroes?: The One and Only Hippo Private Eye

Elephantmen: Wounded Animals Hardcover
Published by: Image
Written by: Richard Starkings
Art by: Moritat and others
Price: $24.99

NOTHING says fun like noir and anthropomorphism ... No, really. Elephantmen is the evolution of Starking and Ladronn's HipFlask and here we get to see the larger
world with many more characters. Between Hieronymous "Hip" Flask, Ebenezer "Ebony" Hide, Tusk, Obidiah Horn, Elijah Delany, Miki, Savannah, Kazushi Nikken, Sahara, Serehghetti ... All of the characters are interesting and the whole series (including the mini-series that come before that are also available in very handsome hardcover collections) is really compelling.
The premise of the series is at once simple and complex. Kazushi Nikken set about the creation of these animal human hybrids in Africa under the flag of the Mappo Corporation. Nikken committed unspeakable atrocity after unspeakable atrocity to
create his Elephantmen, his own personal army so he could attempt to take over the world ... And he damn near did it. During the dismantling of his army the creatures that he created were recognized as citizens of the world and they are now living among us. Some more successfully so than others. Here we are talking about characters who work as agents of the Information Agency, who are entrepreneurs, who are criminals, who are the unfortunate products of an insane scientist, as well as human characters who love, fear, respect, hate ... Who feel the full gamut of emotions about these characters ... Just like you will if you give them sufficient time.
Richard Starkings is more than just a genius when it comes to lettering he is also a fantastic writer who manages to make men who are half hippopotamus feel incredibly human (Joe Kelly also contributes a really heart warming short story called Captain Stoneheart and The Truth Fairy). Moritat is a phenomenal artist who creates an awesome feel to every issue doing pencils, inks, and colors on the main story of each issue, the rest of the stories are drawn by a group of diverse and equally amazing artists like Chris Bachalo, Brian Bolland, J. Scott Campbell, Ian Churchill, Nick Filardi, Henry Flint, David Hine, Aron Lusen, Joe Madureira, Tom Scioli, Dave Stewart, & Chris Weston. And trust me when I say that for $24.99 (and in hardcover) not only are you not likely to find a better bang for your buck but rarely are you going to find a better quality collection.

For more information check out: www.hipflask.com, or listen to interviews with Richard Starkings over at Wordballoon or over at Comixology!

What Do You Mean They're Not Superheroes?: iFanboy Crossover

Another Crossover into another show (apparently I [Scott] have too much time on my hands ... then again I decided to start a podcast and an accompanying blog ... so that was evident) and in this crossover you can hear me ask the iFanboys some pertinent questions (some of which they totally punted).

Blog Log #2 (Do You Know Jack?)

Hey, Hey, Hey its fat Robert!
If you have not guessed it, I am the new guy with the sweet sweet voice who has teamed up with "Dyn-O-Mite" Darren Does and "The Succulent" Scotty Don't on ComicDorkscast. I would like to apologize for you not being able to hear me talk this (you know my voice sends a chill up you spine, for better or worse) but rather read it with spelling and grammar errors. Spell and grammar check yo'self befo you wreck yo'self foooool! Anyway strap in cause my first blog will now begin. (Is this a blog? If so there goes my blog v-card, so be gentle)
I feel it is my duty ( go ahead and laugh i said duty) to do my best to help comic readers get a chance to read the best stories possible, therefore, you should know Jack.
Once upon a time there were these guys; James Robinson, Tony Harris, Archie Goodwin, Ted Knight, David Knight, Jack Knight, Mr.(you should know as the one and only Sandman,) Wesley Dodds. (I know all you Gaiman lovers out there are all confused now, but its the same guy mention in the first issue of the Sandman you know, recognize!) and Mrs. Dodds, the O'Hares, The Shade, and many of the greatest folks of the DCU all got together to teach comic readers what reading comic books is all about, while cramming 40 odd years of DC history all wrapped up in one sweet little story. Sounds too good too be true? Find out for yourself.
Luckily, the month of May will give you that chance. STARMAN in hardcover format with all the bells and whistles someone forgot to include in the trades. Sorry to all the folks that bought all the trades, got to the end and wanted more STARMAN. The good news is there is more STARMAN you never got to read, the better news is you can buy the story again, the even better news is it is worth spending the extra money on this to get the story as the creators intended it to be told. This is a story everyone who every enjoyed a comic at one time in their life whether you like superhero stories or not. This is for anybody who has seen a movie they loved, heard a song that told a story they loved. In short the universe as a whole needs to read this story. I lay my most important rep and all my street cred on everything I have just said. Enough! But rest assured there will be more STARMAN praise to come. Now lets get to this weeks comics. A good week indeed, but my highlite is reading the DC books and turning the page to find a glorious ad for STARMAN. Tune in to the podcast so we can finish this conversation, totally one sided just the way I like it. That's it for now.

***Are you happy now Scotty, can you get off my back now!!!- love, Rob
