Brief Mentions: Kirkman… You Scare Me…

Destroyer #1

Written By: Robert Kirkman

Art By: Corey Walker

This book almost passed me by. I did not even know of this book until 3 hours after I had already purchased my books for the week. A few days later, I returned to my local comic shop and purchased Destroyer #1. After some intense research, (going to wikipedia) I found some interesting information on this long forgotten hero of yesteryear. Destroyer’s origin is very similar to that of Captain America and was created in 1941 under Marvels old moniker, Timely Comics. Behind the mask is American Journalist, Keen Marlow, who is captured by Nazis during WWII. An anti-Nazi German scientist gives Marlow the super soldier serum and Marlow joins the ranks of superhumans. Since his debut in the 40’s, Destroyer slowly fell from the comic pages and forever trapped in the pages of the golden age, until now. Creative team Robert Kirkman and Corey Walker (Invincible anyone?), decide to revive this long dead superhero under the MAX comics banner. Here is some advice… KEEP THIS COMIC FAR FAR FAR FAR FAR FAR FAR out of reach of children. The MAX title is not a joke. I haven’t seen this much blood since…o wait… I guess the last issue of Invincible… but it’s still really bloody. Kirkman really jumps into the story and develops and excellent first issue and raises many plot devices and questions. Corey Walker’s art is simply astounding and is able to make gore even gorier. This five issue miniseries is going to be a great read and a very intense rollercoaster ride. Witness the resurrection of Destroyer!

The Invincible Iron Man #12

Written By: Matt Fraction

Art By: Salvador Larroca

The reign of darkness continues and things are becoming bleaker for our ironclad hero. Norman Osborn is now the center of American defenses. And Pepper Potts: Superhero? Eleven issues ago I did not read Iron Man and had no prior reading experience with the character. I never personally cared for the character of Tony Stark because he caused the demise of one of the most beloved comic characters of all time. He just seemed like a drunk that I could not relate to…. O how wrong I was. With just twelve issues, Fraction and Larroca has truly made me come to love this character. Every hero is a definition of the hardships they face (I promise I’m not quoting zoom) and Stark’s heroism is being put to the test. Also seeing Pepper Potts in an iron man suit is one of the coolest ideas seen in comics in a long time. I loved Pepper Potts in The Order and am glad to see that the character didn’t disappear into nothingness. If there is anyone out there who loves this book and hasn’t read The Order…. GO READ IT NOW!!!! The Order was the first exposure I ever had to Matt Fraction’s work and I have been a fan ever since. I don’t think I need to say that Larroca’s art continues to be stunning as always and really helps the book come to life. As we know (from the KC PlanetComicon special) things are going to get worse for Tony but hey… he’s made of iron for a reason right?

What Do You Mean They Aren't Superheroes?: Sneak Peek Reviews: 12/16/08

Invincible Iron Man #8
Written by: Matt Fraction
Art by: Salvador Larroca

Alright, alright, alright … Matt Fraction is the man. I’ve said it before I know … but he proves it month in and month out on Invincible Iron Man. This is quite possibly the perfect book for a guy like Fraction. He loves bleeding edge technology and he loves futurist stories (is it any wonder that he got his start thanks to Warren Ellis’ message boards). Salvador Larroca also is proving that he can not only do a really gorgeous book but that it can also come out monthly with no visible loss in quality. Dark Reign is starting to look like it is going to actually be rather fun, and this is coming from someone who loves to poo-poo the big thing going on at Marvel these days. So, what is it about Dark Reign that I am finding exciting? I think it’s that Bendis and the rest of the writers at Marvel have finally found a way to reinvent the wheel when it comes to Super Villain Team-Ups. This story actually feels like the heroes have failed and that the bad guys might actually have something to offer to the rest of the world. It’s like the villains have gone from being mindless thugs to Hezbollah, all of a sudden they are clearly bad people but they have something to offer to the populace and so things get a bit shady for Joe Six Pack. Kudos to you Matt Fraction, kudos to you indeed.

Mighty Avengers #20
Written by: Brian Michael Bendis
Art by: Lee Weeks, Carlo Pagulayan, & Jim Cheung

There’s something about a funeral that I find fascinating, especially a fictional funeral. When a well loved character dies there is something about the way that an author decides to depict the mourning of that passing that makes for interesting reading. I think that it is safe to say that over the next year or so that THE character to watch at Marvel is Dr. Henry “Hank” Pym. He is a man who was just at the brink of having his life fall back into some semblance of normality when it was all roughly and rudely pulled out from underneath him. And once he came back he found that the world had become a much, much different place. Pym has been a character relegated to the background for far too long and I think that if anyone can find a way to make him rise back to prominence it is writers like Bendis, Slott and Gage … it’ll just be a matter of figuring out who gets to make this one time headliner, one time welcome mat, a headliner again. So, when you read the funeral for Janet Van Dyne think that it is not so much an end for one character as it is a rebirth for another.

Hellblazer #250
Written by: Dave Gibbons, Brian Azzarello, China Mieville, Jamie Delano, & Peter Milligan
Art by: Sean Phillips, Rafael Grampa, Giuseppe Camuncoli, David Lloyd, & Eddie Campbell

Who would have ever thought that a character like John Constantine would be able to sustain an ongoing series for over 20 years? When Alan Moore created the character in the pages of his historic (and criminally under read) run on Swamp Thing I doubt even he thought that the character would catch on so brilliantly. When you look back at the kinds of talent that have worked on the character in the last twenty years it should boggle your mind. Some of the most talented writers and artists to work in comics today have penned and penciled the character who is the quintessential loner. This is a fantastically timed anniversary issue that can double as a holiday issue. Each of these short stories really rather well put together and ultimately it makes a great time to start checking out the book. Here’s to another 250, cheers!

Living Up To Expectations: (I had no expectations but they were totally fulfilled!)

The Invincible Iron Man # 7

Writer- Matt Fraction

Art- Salvador Larroca

All right, I want to hate Tony Stark more than anything else in this world. Sometimes, he makes it is easier than others. One more reason he is an arrogant bastard. In the wake of Ezekiel being a little big for his britches we are left hoping Fraction can keep up the good work. Scotty brought up a really great point to me today. He said something along the lines of this story arc being a test. With Fraction coming out of the gates in such a great, intense fashion leaves me hoping his wad was not blown. After reading issue # 7, I am sure he has plenty more wad to come.

This issue had two; really great interactions between three of Marvel’s finest. It was interesting to see Tony and Spidey crossing paths, post One More Day. You remember… oh, wait…Mephisto made so nobody remembers. Tony has no idea that Peter is Spiderman, only an unregistered vigilante. Despite Stark being reluctant, Spidey is dead set on a team-up. Throughout this team-up there is plenty of interesting conversation between these two heroes. These conversations help us decipher what is going on in these guy’s heads and why they do the things do. Now, on to the last page. This page is the very reason I’m conflicted about Tony Stark. The one part douche bag playboy is easy to hate, where the humanitarian seems to have feelings of an almost human nature. I still blame him for Cap’s death; therefore, it is hard to give him a chance but this book is really fucking good. Great writing + Great Art = Really Fucking Good. For the other team-up in these pages read the book, you fools.-Rob

BUY THIS SERIES OR TONY WILL KILL YOU, LIKE HE DID STEVE ROGERS!!!
