Living Up To Expectation: Some Comics Leave Us Speechless; Some Comics We Don’t Have Enough To Say

Invincible #60

Written By: Robert Kirkman

Art By: Ryan Ottley

Wow! Just read it.

The Punisher #3

Written By: Rick Remender

Art By: Jerome Opena

Some comics consistently remind me monthly why I read comics. In depth characters, impossible scenarios and beautiful artwork are just a few reasons. The Punisher fulfills all of these. Written by Rick Remender with art by Jarome Opena, The Punisher is really making its mark in the Marvel publishing house. Since issue #1 with the face off between Frank Castle and the Sentry I knew this was the beginning of something great. It’s hard to imagine any one coming close to the great work Garth Ennis did for ten years on this character but Remender comes damn near close and doesn’t have the comfort of a MAX title. Punisher has recruited a sidekick, an oracle-esque computer whiz, capable of hacking and tracking almost anything possible. Seeing Punisher in the old school Punisher uniform is also a treat. Jerome Opena puts really dark pencils on these pages and remind me of a Daredevil or Captain America book (which is a huge compliment). Killing is The Punisher’s business and in this era of Dark Reign – killing is good. Punisher takes to the streets and strategically takes out the criminal element. The hood appears to start some trouble as well as mysterious figure (who likes to play chess). Remender and Opena really have a great handle on this character and masterfully balance the violence and action to provide great story telling. So embrace Dark Reign and enter the world of The Punisher.

Ryan Ottley drew a great review of Invincible #60 this week. It looks like this:

Brief Mentions: Somebody Get That Guy Some Skin Lotion Or Something

Hellblazer #252

Written By: Peter Milligan

Art By: Guiseppe Camuncoli

I love a comic that breaks the mold. Superheroes are cool and all don’t get me wrong. I love to see Hal Jordon thwart Sinestro’s devious plans; Batman once again beat the laugh out of the Joker, and Lex Luthor defeat Superman…. O wait vice versa (but a man can dream). But a book that can help break the monotony is a welcomed read. There are many titles that fulfill this need such as Criminal, House of Mystery, I Kill Giants, Young Liars and Northlanders but one book just has the right mixture that keeps me coming back for more. Hellblazer is a book that is always at the top of the comic pile. A chain-smoking Englishmen who was a punk rocker and not to mention a demon ass kicker – I say yes please. In this issue, Constantine is up to his usual shenanigans; killing scab babies and saving the world. Man if I had a nickel for every time I had to kill a scab baby…. But anyways, Hellblazer #252 is part two in the “scab” story arc written by Peter Milligan and art by Guiseppe Camuncoli. What is so great about this title is a constant rotating cast of creators. This offers an eclectic selection of creative touches, which leaves a lasting impression on the title as a whole. Milligan and Camuncoli successfully create a compelling story that puts all, including Constantine, in mortal danger. This issue, as weird as it may sound, will leave you saying “somebody get that guy some skin lotion of something.”

Frank Castle: The Punisher #67

Written By: Duane Swerczynski

Art By: Michel Lacombe
Punisher. Punisher. Punisher. What is there to say? Frank Castle: The Punisher #67 hit the shelves this week and as I have been since Ennis left – I was skeptic. Written by Duane Swerczynski and art by Michel Lacombe, Punisher continues his crusade against the corrupt underbelly of society. Part two in the “6 hours to kill” story arc, we find Frank in a situation he usually not it – under threat of death. 6 hours to kill is not just a eye-catching title, Frank literally has only 6 hours to kill. As discussed in last issue, Castle has been shot up with poison and has only six hours to live. With only six hours to live, Castle does what he does best, he maims, he hurts, and he kills. Though the story is great and the art is equal in its amazingness, I feel that there is slowly becoming a lack of complexity of the Punisher as was seen in the Ennis era. I won’t cast stones right now considering its only the second issue but I will keep my eyes open. If you like a nice, violent, Punisher story, this book definitely delivers. With all the gun shooting, head crushing, death-defying (read Project Superpowers) action we have all come to admire in our violent hero.

Sneak Peek Reviews: 01/06/09

Punisher #1
Written by: Rick Remender

Art by: Jerome Opena

I admit that I am hesitant to write about this book. Almost as hesitant as I was to read it. Ending Punisher War Journal was an interesting decision on the part of Marvel. Starting a new series called Punisher the following week was yet another interesting decision. Deciding to change the title on your long running series from Punisher (MAX) to Punisher: Frank Castle (MAX) was also an interesting decision.

A lot of interesting decisions and a lot of hesitation.

I have come to the decision that everytime Rick Remender sits down at the keyboard to write a comic he does so with the intention of doing whatever he must to make the book my pick of the week. Every time Jerome Opena decides to draw a page of a comic he decides not only am I going to make Scott's jaw drop to the floor I am going to make it better than the page I just finished. He is an INCREDIBLE talent.

Honestly, this book is really freaking great. 22 pages of totally awesome comic-booking. It's almost an auto reccommend to anyone who wanders past. But Marvel is Marvel ... and they always have to find someway to screw the pooch. They made this a $3.99 book and included "The Punisher - Saga" in the back. Why? Seriously: Why? This was soooooo close to being the perfect comic book. It was totally unecessary for you to up the page count and include the Saga. Anyone picking up this book is familiar with The Punisher. You did an homage cover to his first appearance ... IT SCREAMS "BUY ME FANBOY! BUY ME!" ... and fanboys aren't the ones who need the Punisher - Saga ...

But seriously ... buy it anyway ... cause it's that damn good.

Shrapnel #1 (of 5)
Written by: M. Zachary Sherman
Art by: Bagus Hutomo

Radical Comics has been doing a lot of things right when it comes to launching a new comic company. They have exciting titles. They have interesting creators. They are working in largely underused genres. As long as they don't fall into the trap that a lot of interesting new comic companies fall into ... getting too big too fast (Yeah I'm looking at you Virgin and CrossGen) ... they'll have a bright future ahead of themselves.

Shrapnel #1 is pretty cool. I won't say that it's the next great comic to hit the shelves or that it's going to change the way you think about comics or sci-fi or war or giant robot combat ... cause it very likely won't. But when it comes down to brass tacks it's really got a lot of good things going for it.

Imagine Gattica if you added interplanetary conflict and ... well, giant robot combat. Shrapnel is certainly not treading on new ground when it comes to sci-fi but it does so with a dancers grace. There is a lot of interesting story telling done in this first issue and the artwork is also pretty great.

There are, admittedly, some problems that I have with it. The whole book is poorly lit and so a bit of the action is hard to follow, and the whole thing has the feel of being the opening sequence of a video game. But if you can ignore those things then I'd say that this is the kind of book that will leave you smiling and wanting to see what happens next. And at #1.99 for 48 pages of comic on good quality paper and full color ... it's certainly worth checking out ... especially on a light comic week like this one.

Black Lightning #1 (of 6)
Written by: Jen Van Meter
Art by: Cully Hamner

The first time I read a comic written by Jen Van Meter I knew I was reading something special. Hopeless Savages wound up being one of my favorite Indie comics for a good long while and it remains a sentimental favorite for a lot of reasons. When I heard Jen Van Meter was going to be writing an arc on JSA: Classified I got a little excited and a little worried. And then I read the first issue of "Honor Among Thieves" and I saw that my worry was for naught.

When I first encountered Cully Hamner on Batman: Tenses I had a really good feeling about his future as an artist and I have really and truly enjoyed watching him develop in the brief while I have been following his career. His revamp of the Blue Beetle costume was amazing and it was his look for the character that drew me into the title and it fast became one of my favorites as well.

When I found out that the two of them were going to be working together on, of all things, Black Lightning: Year One ... I damn near jumped out of my chair. I have always loved the character of Black Lighting and think that Jefferson Pierce is one of the coolest characters in the DCU. The idea of a public school teacher/principal by day superhero by night has always sat just right with me. Getting a chance to follow his early adventures really gives me a thrill and I waited with baited breath to read the first issue.

Boy was I pleased.

The story-telling choices that Van Meter makes really just sing. The idea of following the first year of a hero, not from the perspective of the hero himself, from the point of view of Jefferson's wife (especially knowing their future) is an effort of brilliance. Watching the Pierce family in their formative years is really special (again especially when you think about what happens to each one of them). There is something really magic about this comic and I cannot wait to read issue #2 and I hope that each and every one of you out there pick up a copy when you go into the store tomorrow.

You won't regret it.

Brief Mentions: Punisher Finds a Second Wind

Punisher #63
Written By: Gregg Hurwitz
Art By: Laurence Campbell

As I wipe away the tears caused by the end of Garth Ennis’ Punisher run, I can’t imagine how any writer could follow such a series. Several months ago, I discovered that with issue #61, Gregg Hurwitz (Foolkiller) would be taking the wheel. Unfamiliar with his work, both in comics and his best-selling crime novels, I was wary. I was on the fence whether I wanted to continue with the series or not. In the end, I decided to give issue #61 a chance. It was strange not seeing a Tim Bradstreet cover as I’ve been accustomed to seeing over the years, but Dave Johnson does a great job make it intriguing and complex. The first two issues of this series were good and kept me wanting more. Hurwitz has a good sense of the character and what makes the Frank Castle the character he is. This week, issue #63 (part three in the “Girls in White Dresses” story arc) hit the stores. This is the best issue yet. The setting is a small town in Mexico in which disappearances and kidnapping have ravaged the community and forced the residents to employ someone whom they heard takes the law into his own hands – The Punisher. We see the Punisher close to defeat in this issue and biting steel periodically throughout. What happens when you become your enemy? That’s the question that is raised in this issue. With a great story and the extreme violence that we’ve all have come to love from the MAX series. Laurence Campbell (2000 AD) adds a great look to this book. The use of dark, neutral colors makes the book feel like a Punisher story. I can continue to talk about how great this issue was but the true reason for writing this article is to get people to go pick up this book. Whether you don’t read Punisher at all or you stopped at issue sixty (…Rob…) let me assure you - The Punisher is still in full swing.

What Do You Mean They're Not Superheroes?: Punisher Without Ennis

The Punisher #61
Written by: Gregg Hurwitz
Art by: Laurence Campbell

For nine long years Garth Ennis owned Frank Castle, The Punisher. Marvel may have published the book but in all honesty it is as though Gerry Conway created the character in 1974 in order for it to be around for Ennis, who was 4 at the time, to one day write. But now Garth has moved on. Over 119 issues Ennis crafted and honed a character that many had toyed with in the past but few had truly managed to get a handle on. So, it is very, very understandable that people would be worried that the title would lose quality when a new writer took the reigns after Ennis left with last week's issue #60. And to be honest I was one of them. And also in all honesty there is no way that I can say whether or not Gregg Hurwitz can live up to the craft of Ennis after just one issue. But what I can say is that it was a very enjoyable issue. Hurwitz has a certain skill for comics as he has already done a bang up job with the recent Foolkiller mini-series, and did a very admirable job on his recent Wolverine: Deathsong Annual. What he has done here is stay pretty true to the style of story that Ennis had established. Girls in White Dresses certainly grabs you by your shirt collar and pulls you into it's story in a way that barely gives you time to notice that Ennis is gone, and the art by Laurence Campbell is pretty darn good as well, it's dark and moody and awfully reminiscent of another artist currently working at Marvel who has a pretty good following for himself, Micheal Lark. One thing that most people will forget in the throes of missing Garth Ennis is that also gone is cover artist Tim Bradstreet, but in his place is another cover artist who has become rather well known for working on another crime book intended for mature readers, Dave Johnson. All in all I have to say that this is really a pretty good first issue for Hurwitz and that in all honesty I think that it should be considered a good first issue whether you think of it as the beginning of a whole new title as some people have mentioned or if you take it into context with the whole of the Ennis run as others are bound to. My recommendation, check it out. Just remember that Hurwitz is on the title for 5 issues and then Duane Swierczynski comes on for 5 issues and then Victor Gischler will follow for 5 issues ... if things work out then we've got 3 different writers and 3 different artists working on the title and hopefully, if they are all as good as this first issue, we can have a rather good Punisher book for the foreseeable future ... I'll keep my fingers crossed.
