What Do You Mean They're Not Superheroes?: Punisher Without Ennis

The Punisher #61
Written by: Gregg Hurwitz
Art by: Laurence Campbell

For nine long years Garth Ennis owned Frank Castle, The Punisher. Marvel may have published the book but in all honesty it is as though Gerry Conway created the character in 1974 in order for it to be around for Ennis, who was 4 at the time, to one day write. But now Garth has moved on. Over 119 issues Ennis crafted and honed a character that many had toyed with in the past but few had truly managed to get a handle on. So, it is very, very understandable that people would be worried that the title would lose quality when a new writer took the reigns after Ennis left with last week's issue #60. And to be honest I was one of them. And also in all honesty there is no way that I can say whether or not Gregg Hurwitz can live up to the craft of Ennis after just one issue. But what I can say is that it was a very enjoyable issue. Hurwitz has a certain skill for comics as he has already done a bang up job with the recent Foolkiller mini-series, and did a very admirable job on his recent Wolverine: Deathsong Annual. What he has done here is stay pretty true to the style of story that Ennis had established. Girls in White Dresses certainly grabs you by your shirt collar and pulls you into it's story in a way that barely gives you time to notice that Ennis is gone, and the art by Laurence Campbell is pretty darn good as well, it's dark and moody and awfully reminiscent of another artist currently working at Marvel who has a pretty good following for himself, Micheal Lark. One thing that most people will forget in the throes of missing Garth Ennis is that also gone is cover artist Tim Bradstreet, but in his place is another cover artist who has become rather well known for working on another crime book intended for mature readers, Dave Johnson. All in all I have to say that this is really a pretty good first issue for Hurwitz and that in all honesty I think that it should be considered a good first issue whether you think of it as the beginning of a whole new title as some people have mentioned or if you take it into context with the whole of the Ennis run as others are bound to. My recommendation, check it out. Just remember that Hurwitz is on the title for 5 issues and then Duane Swierczynski comes on for 5 issues and then Victor Gischler will follow for 5 issues ... if things work out then we've got 3 different writers and 3 different artists working on the title and hopefully, if they are all as good as this first issue, we can have a rather good Punisher book for the foreseeable future ... I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Blog Log # 2 (I'm not who you think I am... BUB!)

I would like to start by saying I'm sorry. I have been slacking a bit lately on the blog logs. I will try to do better, at least catch up to Darren's pace on articles. (yep... cheap shot!
don't be scared to hit back lil guy. all in good fun. all about self enjoyment. all about me trying to get you to like me.) Now prepare yourself for my list of excuses. 1) been trying to wrap up an album, while trying to learn pro tools at the same time.(bit frustrating at times & leaves me bit uninspired to write) 3) been reading a lot of comics with the lil free time I've been getting.( A few things I've read are Seven Soldiers by Grant Morrison and a variety of artists including the wonderful Ryan Sook and J H Williams. Agents of Atlas by Jeff Parker with pencils by Leonard Kirk and fantastic covers by Tomm Coker. The Umbella Academy TP- consult the show for more info. The Vinyl Undergroud TP-again with the show. Currently, I'm half way through the third HC of Ultimate Spider-man.) One thing I have read recently that blew me away is Greg Rucka's re-launch of Wolverine. I admit, originally I bought this book when it went to Marvel Knights @ issue #13.(more a Rucka fan than a Wolverine fan) Rucka had this book from issue #1 thru #19. I picked up #1-#12 @ the last back issue sale the Fantasy Shop had.(one more week til the next one) This run consists of the stories; Brotherhood(art by Darick Robertson), a touching stand alone in a bar with Father Kurt (Robertson), Coyote Crossing (art by Leandro Fernandez), a stand alone titled Dream (Robertson returns), and Return of the Native (still Robertson). These stories lead into Millar and JR Jr's run. Rucka made me feel like a fool for not picking this up as it came out, but then again the sale allowed me to get them for super cheap. This was a story where Logan is the kinda of Logan I love. A little bit Punisher like, if you will, Frank with claws instead of guns in a twisted version of Easy Rider. (yeah that hippy film) Little did I know these issues, that I ignored would end up crushing Enemy of the State and that Agent story. Greg Rucka proved once again why he is one of my favorite writers in comics. If you love good comics and don't know about Rucka you best get to it. If you have any questions on where to start your love for Rucka shoot us and e- mail we would be glad to be part of your Rucka exploration. That's is it for now folks.- Rob

Blog Log # 2 (Uh oh it's magic. When I'm with you. Uh oh it's magic. Just a little magic you know its true. I got a hold on you.)

In the shadows lurk a pact. We will call them um... Shadowpact. Shadowpact is a team that bands together to fight against magical/mystical evils.(out of the back of a bar but not just any bar!) Satan knows there's enough of that mumbo jumbo going on out there.(i just felt a needle twisting in my side. hope my doll has chops as big as the snaz. that's right the snaz that can smell the future. this blog log turns out fantastic.) This sweet little book is brought to us by Bill Willingham ( also an art appearence by Billy Willy in the first issue) and the fine people of DC. (cough! cough! they cancelled another good book cough! cough!) Keep in mind this is one of those Willingham books that Sturges (that's Matthew) takes over, which, we are seeing happen a bit as of late. Maybe a bit more than just a bit, I am not here to judge. Now don't get it twisted, Matty picks up right where Billy leaves off. Not only that, I feel he takes these books and continues to rock them. Art on this book (ok, I'm not gonna list them all) was done by a slew of folks. Shadowpact consists of Detective Chimp (eat your heart out Bruce), Blue Devil (guy with a funny origin story), RagMan (guy with funnier origin story. issue #8, one of the best single issues i've read in a while.) NightMaster (guy) Enchantress (a dame), NightShade (another dame and a dark one ta boot. mood not skin color you racial profilin' fools), Rex (the best friend a Blue Devil could ever have and totally named after a Townes song.) and a dude named Flipper (his real name will never be mentioned by me. HE SHALL BE FLIPPER FOREVER!!!) amongst many more my memory fails to remember at this moment. Don't go thinking that there are no other great characters in this short tale of misfits destined to fail. This book is riddled with DC's finest and as far as failing? Guess you'll just have to read it for yourself. I must mention one last thing. Thanks to all you schmucks that didn't buy this book. (are you to blame?) We toatally suck! That's right I only bought the last few issues. You see the Fantasy Shop has these things called back issue sales. These sales are like heaven for poor comic lover's. Check out the website for the dates of the next one. http://www.fantasyshoponline.com/ So I am also part of the problem. I'm sure we will see these characters pop up elsewhere in the DCU. (any Detective fans out there? you know what i'm talking about.) So there you have it. See it did turn out fantastic. (SNIFF! SNIFF! wouldn't you like to know. all i'll say is beware)- your pal, Rob
(looky there I got a picture! I be advancin!)

Blog Log # 2 (loneliest hump day ever!)

Howdy folks! As you know it's new comic book day and we have NO NEW BOOKS! It'll be alright, they will be here soon. Since I am a kind hearted fella, I am here to supply you with a pre-blog log quote of the week. I've been reading Brubaker's run on Batman (which has been as good as it sounds) for the last few days. This takes place just after No Man's Land, through Murderer, Fugitive, and right into Gotham Central. ( Gotham Central is up their with the best stories DC has ever produced, baleedat!) Greg Rucka was on Detective during this time, as well! If you are interested (and if your not, maybe it's time to re-evaluate your station in life) shoot us an e-mail or just leave a comment on this post and I will tell you everything you need to read this story, just like me. (I know everybody wants to be me! It's all about self lovein' and ego, get that noggin as big as you can.) Any Checkmate fans out there really need to get these books to complete their Checkmate run, as well. Anywho (I always hated that word. How bout you? I mean, anywho? Really who says things like that?) this is about a qoute, right? "Why is the right wing so threatened anytime someone wants to examine things on an intellectual level? Why does every response have to be an attack?" (This could be the funniest thus far. If I dropped an F-bomb Propagandhi might even be proud.) Aw hell, here's another one. "Tobacco is Whacko... if you're a teen."(So if you are 12 or younger smoke em if you got em. Same for you 20 and older folks too! Thank you to Lorillard Tobacco company for this wise advice. You are a true sage.) Be talkin' to you soon, Rob

p.s. Any music lovers out there? Lucero @ the Creepy Crawl this Friday! That's the 30th of May. You never know I might see you around a "rack". (I shoulda got paid for an advertisement like this!)

Blog Log # 2 (HOW TO START A WAR!!!)

I just wasted precious time that I will never get back. Two words; Shit samich, steaming pile, Doo Doo, the brown, or The Order. What the hell man? Who cares about a stupid team in Californ I A? Would you believe Neil Young was quoted amoungst other fine people through out this bottomless pit of tripe.( sorry Neil! I'm trying to piss two people off right now. Remember me I was the guy who paid nearly $100 to see you? Your lucky, it was worth every penny not that you should continue to stick it to us poor fans.) What kinda hippy crap is that? Not groovey and I don't dig it ...man. Upon completeing this series I thought, what should I do now? So I dropped a duece and wiped my sweet ass with the pages. That's right Pepper caught a glimpse of my good side. You know maybe I have found a use for the Order. Nope, paper cuts. Turns out the Order has no use at all. Frankly, I'm suprised Matt Fraction put his name on the cover. You hear that guys? Whaddup now? Eat it, poop it out, eat it again, and love every second of it! - your pal, Devil's Advocate

THIS MIGHT BE SATIRE?

Blog Log #2 (Giggity Giggity Oh Yeah)

Howdy folks! I just got current on Birds of Prey and if feels nice. I started with Simone and made a smooth transition to Bedard to Mckeever back to Simone for one issue then back to Mckeever. This was done very seamlessly. I must admit it took me a while to realize the characters had faces, if you know what I mean. This book has Black Canary, Babs, Jim, Huntress, Lady Shiva, Baby Shiva (Sin), Lady BlackHawk, Savant, Creote, and Misfit.( sorry to all I did not mention) Not to mention many appearences of your favorite major DCU players. Birds of Prey is a great hero book. There is use of funny, action, mini skirts, bubble booties, and drama (done correctly). I recommend this book to any DC fanboy or anybody that loves a great story with an all star cast. Read it or you might be labled a sexist. Read it or Misfit will have her daaaaaaaaaark veeeeeeeengence on you. Wednesday is fast approaching, are you ready? Rob

p.s. I heard the Dixon stuff was pretty great as well. I still need to track it down, so I don't know. Let me know if you know.

p.s.s. (two words) VISTA SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I want my XP back you bastards
